Detailing vs Washing · Eugene & Springfield, OR

A Wash Cleans. A Detail Resets.

A $15 tunnel wash and a $300 detail are not competitors; they are different jobs. One removes this week’s dirt. The other removes the year’s buildup and leaves protection behind. Knowing which one your car needs right now saves money in both directions.

A wash, whether a tunnel or a driveway bucket, deals with loose surface dirt. A detail works the vehicle surface by surface: foam and hand washing, wheels and trim done properly, bonded contamination clayed off on the deeper packages, sealant laid down, and an interior treated piece by piece instead of sprayed and wiped. A wash maintains. A detail resets the clock.

When the cheap wash is the right call

Between details, absolutely use them: a touchless wash every few weeks keeps grit from building up and keeps the sealant working. What a wash cannot do is remove bonded sap and fallout, restore an interior, or protect paint, because those are not its job.

What the price difference buys

Time and outcome. A tunnel gives the vehicle three minutes; I give it several hours. A wash leaves paint clean until the next rain. A detail leaves it clean, smooth, sealed for months, and an interior reset to a standard a gas station vacuum will never see. Different jobs, honestly priced for what each one is.

Straight answers

Do automatic car washes damage paint?

Brush tunnels can, over time: recycled brushes drag grit across the clear coat and leave fine swirls. Touchless tunnels are the safer between-details habit. If your paint already shows swirl haze in sunlight, that is machine correction territory, quoted after an in-person look.

Is a detail just an expensive car wash?

No. Washing is one step of roughly a dozen in a detail. The rest, decontamination, sealant, wheels and trim done properly, deep interior work, is where the hours and the price live.

How long does a detail last?

The P&S Defender paint sealant protects for months, and a maintained interior holds just as long. Regular washes stretch both, which is why the wash and the detail are partners, not rivals.

Which should I book first?

If the vehicle has not had real work in a year or more, start with a detail so there is something worth maintaining. The fit check on the homepage recommends the right package in sixty seconds.
